International Workshop on Solid Waste Management

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government, the Joint Higher Council for Solid Waste Management in Hebron and Bethlehem Governorates, in cooperation with the World Bank and the Mediterranean Integration Center, organized a workshop entitled “Discussion on the Problems Afflicting Refugee Host Countries, in particular Palestinian Experience in Solid Waste Management”. Mayors of Jordan and Turkey, with the participation of Hebron Governorate, Bethlehem, Bethlehem Governorate, the Environmental Quality Authority in the two governorates and a group of mayors and local councils, the workshop was organized in the Jacir Palace Hotel – Bethlehem.
The workshop was opened by Eng. Yasser Dweik, Executive Director of the Joint Council. For the Jordanian and Turkish municipalities to participate in the activities of the workshop, noting that this workshop has a distinctive character to be in Palestine today.
The workshop started with a speech by the Governor of Bethlehem, Major General Jibreen Al-Bakri, who welcomed the participants, especially the mayors of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Republic of Turkey, and thanked the Joint Council and the World Bank for organizing this important workshop, pointing out that the Minya landfill project is one of the most important projects implemented for its role in Resolving a major environmental problem that was afflicting Hebron and Bethlehem governorates, thanking all those who contributed to the financing and success of this project.
Al-Bakri affirmed that Bethlehem Governorate is in constant contact with the project management in order to maintain it as a national pilot project in the region, stressing the importance of developing the project and benefiting from international expertise in this field, pointing out that Palestine has achieved success in this sector despite all the obstacles imposed by the Israeli occupation. .
In turn, Mohammed Hassan Jabareen, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Local Government, also welcomed all the participants, stressing the depth of the Palestinian relationship with Jordan and the Republic of Turkey and that there is cooperation and permanent partnerships in many areas and sectors concerned with local governance in particular, and pointed out that the organization of this workshop in Palestine confirms that the people The Palestinian government continues to invest in all available opportunities to achieve development in Palestine despite all the challenges posed by the occupation, pointing out that the project of solid waste management in the south and the establishment of Minya landfill is part of the national strategy for solid waste management which is sponsored by The Ministry of Local Government under the leadership of the National Team for the management of solid waste and where this strategy includes the establishment of three dumps in the north, central and southern areas of the West Bank, and presented Jabarin thanked the World Bank for their continued support through numerous strategic projects
